PRO MK2 FAQ

PRO Mk2 doesn't work with my PC ?

1. Install the drivers using the link under download section or install PRO-Manager (which will install the necessary drivers for you)
Once drivers are installed correctly, you can verify by the these pics (Device Manager):

User-added image

2. Once you have the PRO Mk2 identified as shown in the pictures, you can use PRO-Manager to test your PRO Mk2

Mac OSX : PRO Mk2 not found ?

Please install PRO-Manager (which will install the necessary drivers for you)
You can also verify whether PRO Mk2 is listed under System Information as shown:

For OSX El Capitan and newer

OSX 10.11 (El Capitan) is now supported by all ENTTEC Apps. (Nov 2015)

    • For any 3rd party Apps that don't yet support Apple's USB driver, follow this temporary workaround :
    • You can disable Apple's driver by running the following command, while the device is connected
    • Once Apple's driver is disabled, USB communication using D2XX driver will be enabled
    • Open Terminal.app and run the following command:
      sudo kextunload -b com.apple.driver.AppleUSBFTDI
    • Please note: This command will have to be run each time your Mac is restarted

    For (OSX 10.9 - OSX 10.10 only)
Download & install this utility, and disable the Apple/VCP Driver: (click here to download)

    • Simply run the utility, click the button and type in your password.
    • You must be logged into OS X as an admin user (verify this from System Preferences > Users & Groups)
    • You must have a non-blank password configured (see http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13861 )

    1. Once you have disabled Apple/VCP driver , please replug PRO Mk2 into USB port or restart your Mac, and PRO Mk2 will be found as expected

    2. Once you have the PRO Mk2 identified as shown in the pictures, you can use PRO-Manager to test your PRO Mk2

    3. If PRO-Manager is not starting or crashing without running -> Open Terminal, and copy paste this:
    sudo /Applications/PRO-Manager.app/Contents/MacOS/PRO-Manager

What do the colors of led on PRO Mk2 mean?

The color of led signifies current function being performed:

    • white: PRO Mk2 is powered on and idle
    • green: DMX input/output on DMX1
    • yellow: DMX input/output on DMX2
    • purple: MIDI in or out
    • blue: Standalone mode (show playback)
    • red: error mode (need to restore)

PRO Mk2 not found by Martin M-PC ?

    1. Please make sure M-PC is updated to the latest version

    2. PRO Mk2 is running firmware 4.8 or newer (check with PRO-Manager )

    3. Windows must have PRO Mk2 setup as a virtual COM Port- Follow the procedure in this video:

    4. Open M-PC and look under Menu -> System -> Routing: Options should be as shown here
look under Menu -> System -> USB2DMX: PRO Mk2 should be listed here

PRO Mk2 is in error mode (red led is on) ?

    1. This could either be a driver issue, or your PRO Mk2 needs to be flashed with it's firmware.
    - Please try unplugging and plugging back into the computer
    - If that fails you will need to re flash the firmware.

    2. Follow the restore process using PRO-Manager :

Why do my lights flicker when connected to PRO Mk2 ?

It is possible that your lights don't support full refresh rates of DMX (40 fps and above)
You can lower the DMX refresh rate on your PRO Mk2 using PRO-Manager (use 25 fps and below for such lights)

Will PRO Mk2 work with the software I use ?

PRO Mk2 supports a wide range of software available on Windows & Mac
    Full list is available here

PRO Mk2 does not output DMX ?

    • If the led on the PRO MK2 is blinking green: it means it's outputing on DMX1
    • Please use PRO-Manager and use DMX Test to send test patterns to your lights
    • ENTTEC recommends using good 5-pin DMX cable or 3 to 5pin DMX converters only
    • Make sure your lights are addressed correctly by the software
    • If not sure what address your lights are patched to, send to all address (512 channels)
    • Test with another set of lights if you can

How to record show for standalone playback ?

Connect a DMX source to DMX1 or DMX2 and use PRO-Manager to record :

    • The duration of the show depends on the number of channels used (use less channels to record more)
    • Total memory is 2MB. As an example, a show recorded using 50 channels at 40 fps can last 17 mins (assuming each frame is unique)
    • Select standalone options (powerup, loop, delay) before recording
    • Use a recording trigger to control the recording via DMX

Assuming 40fps source, and that each frame is unique, you can achieve the following duration for standalone show

Number of DMX ChannelsRecording in Minutes
    5121.7
    2563.4
    1286.8
    6413.7
    5017.5
    3227.3

Which software support 2 Universe output with PRO Mk2 ?

Currently the following Apps have been tested to support both universe with PRO Mk2:

Does my software support MIDI output via PRO MK2 ?

PRO MK2 implements MIDI similar to USB -> DMX, so the software needs to support it
Your software must implement PRO Mk2 MIDI support as per the PRO Mk2 API.
Please contact the software developer(s) to add support for PRO Mk2

How can I ensure reliable DMX in my setup ?

Follow these helpful rules while using DMX:

    • Up to 32 devices
Up to 32 devices may be connected in a daisy-chain, with a terminator on the last device.
Using a DMX splitter/repeater (opto-isolator) can extend both cable distance (as the signal is regenerated and re-transmitted) and the number of devices (up to 32 per branch)
    • Up to 100 meters
DMX can only travel up to 100 meters before the signal weakens.
    • 5-Pin XLR Plugs
DMX officially supports 5-Pin XLR DMX cables only. However there are readily available 3-pin XLR converters, but it is important to ensure these are DMX compatible (correct pin-out).
DO NOT USE Microphone/audio Cables Many people often substitute cheaper balanced audio cable (regular microphone cable) with tragic results. Audio cable cannot support the signal rate required by the high speed DMX protocol. While the signal may pass over short distances, it is highly susceptible to interference and degradation, causing unpredictable results (such as blinking lights, confused intelligent fixtures, etc.).
    • Use DMX Terminators
If you have setup your devices in a daisy-chain: the final device in the daisy-chain must be terminated. The terminator absorbs signal power which would otherwise be reflected back into the cable and degrade the data. A terminator simply places a 110-120 Ohm, 0.5 Watt resistor across the two transmission wires.
    • Isolate DMX from power
Connect all smart lights to a separate mains which is isolated from the dimmer racks or computer or the audio power amps. Unexpected events might occur if the mains line gets overloaded, and that might affect your DMX control gear.
    • Importance of Isolated Splitter
Use an opto-isolated splitter wherever you can to protect your DMX control gear from any unwanted voltage spikes. Non-isolated dmx control devices must always be protected, otherwise they run the risk of being subject to sudden voltage spikes and might not survive.
